Best child care in the Bronx
How to choose daycare in the Bronx.
Looking for the best child care in the Bronx? New York licenses daycare. The database is public. Most of the anxiety in this search comes from skipping that step and shopping by photos.
01
A current NYS license you can search
Start with the OCFS child care search. Family, group family, and center licenses are different. Match the name, the address, and the facility number. Closed or expired listings should come off your list.
02
A person who is actually in the room
Ask who opens the door and who is still there at pickup. Turnover is not always listed on a website. A tour at an odd hour tells you more than a brochure.
03
A group size you can picture
Sixteen children in a house is still a house. Forty in a center is a different day. Neither is automatically better. Match the room to your child.
04
Public notes, read with a grain of salt
Google stars, parent quotes on a program site, and neighbor referrals are all partial. Missing reviews are common for small Bronx homes. They are not a verdict.
05
A commute you can live with in February
Country Club, Pelham Bay, and Throggs Neck sit in the East Bronx. Some families drive from Queens, New Rochelle, Long Island, or Connecticut. Time the trip on a weekday, in the weather you will actually have.
On the tour
Who will be with my child at 8 a.m. and at 5 p.m.?
In a group family home the listed provider should be able to name the usual adults. Ask what happens if someone is sick.
May I see the current license and the last inspection?
OCFS posts compliance history online. The paper on the wall should match the database. Gaps are a reason to pause.
How many children, and of what ages, are here on a typical Tuesday?
Capacity is a legal maximum, not a daily headcount. Mixed-age rooms feel different from infant-only rooms.
What do you serve, and can we pack food?
Allergies, bottles, and cultural food rules belong in writing before the first full day.
What is the sick-child rule, and who do I call after hours?
A clear fever policy saves both of you. Write down the backup number.
How do you handle the waitlist and the deposit?
Ask whether the deposit is refundable, how long a hold lasts, and whether siblings jump the line. Get it in an email.
What this notebook will not do
It will not rank every program in the Bronx. It will not invent Google reviews or phone numbers. Country Club listings on the next page are public examples — two group family day cares with facility numbers you can type into OCFS tonight.
