What a New York group family day care actually is

New York does not have one “daycare” license. Family day care, group family day care, and day care centers are different legal things. Mixing them up is how parents tour the wrong building.

A family day care is the smallest home license. A group family day care (GFDC) is still a residence, with a higher cap — often up to 16 children when an assistant is present. A day care center is in commercial space and can be much larger. If you want a living room and a backyard, you are usually shopping GFDC.

In Country Club, Bronx, two public GFDC examples are licensed for 16: facility 236999 at 1466 Ohm Ave and facility 821324 at 1601 Ohm Ave. Hours listed: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–6:00 PM. Look them up in OCFS. The paper on the wall should match the database.

Ask who is in the house at 8 a.m. and at 5 p.m. Capacity is a legal maximum, not a daily headcount. Mixed-age rooms feel different from infant-only rooms. None of that is on a star rating.
